The place

At the southeastern corner of Messinia we discover a land decorated with towers. It is Mani or outer Mani as the locals call it. Proud and magisterial, like mount Taygetos which stands from above is characterized by beautiful stone made villages and dramatic variations within its landscape. It is the land of stone and olive trees, the place of galore sunshine, the wide blue sea and air that smells of wildflowers and herbs.

The activity

We start our walk ascending from Kardamili, leaving behind fortified tower houses of the old town and follow the stone paths leading to the neighboring villages of St. Sophia and Petrovouni where we pay a visit to their Byzantine churches. Soon after, we are heading east walking into a pleasant route rich in diversity until we reach the village of Proastio. The plumed smell of nature and the picturesque images are significantly describing the past history of the region and help us listen to the whispers of old Mani. We walk on the old pathways and through fertile olive groves that offer the most important goods of the region, olives and the well known for its quality extra virgin olive oil. In the meantime we get the opportunity for a break to enjoy a healthy picnic with flavors of traditional local food. The place

This route is a small trek to the place and the traditions of outer Mani where every stone has its own history. Here, the magnificence of the mountainous nature is harmoniously combined with the allure of the sea as gigantic mount Taygetos is so close from the embrace of the Mediterranean.

In a small distance ahead, mount Taygetos stands snowed in some of its highest peaks. A small break for a healthy picnic with traditional local delicacies gives us additional supply of energy.
